Triangle Fastener Corporation Helps MRA with Trade Show Giveaways

The Metal Roofing Alliance would like to thank Joe Stager, Vice President of Product Development, Marketing and Sales at Triangle Fastener Corporation for the recent donation of three DeWalt 20V MAX Premium Cordless Drill/Drivers.  Over the past year, the MRA has held random drawings at three different trade shows- METALCON, IRE and Frame Builders.  Our goal has been to encourage metal roofing contractors to provide the MRA with their contact information.  After the show, we reach out to these contractors to provide information about our association and the many benefits of being a contractor member.

Commitment to Quality Residential Roofing: Why It Matters

The Metal Roofing Alliance and our members talk a great deal about quality.  In fact, it’s so important to us that “Investment Grade Roofing” is part of our logo.   Contractors may wonder why it matters so much – isn’t one metal roof just as good as any other?  The answer is NO in capital letters!

Veterans of the industry know that the metal roofing products on the market can vary greatly in quality and  value.  We’ve all seen sub-par products, such as those intended for agricultural applications, improperly installed in a residential neighborhood.  

As a condition of joining the MRA, all of our member manufacturers agree to adhere to strict industry codes regarding the quality of the products sold into the residential market.   

The Importance of Coatings

The type of coating applied to the sheet steel is a key factor in choosing the right product for residential use.  Two types of metallic coatings are used in metal roofing to prevent rust — zinc (galvanized) or zinc plus aluminum (galvalume).  These coatings provide a sacrificial barrier against the elements which prevents the iron from rusting.  Because it sacrifices itself to form zinc oxide or aluminum oxide, the thicker this layer, the more protection against red rust there will be. There are differing amounts of metallic coating used on sheet steel depending upon its final product application.

The numbers G-40; G-60; and G-90 refer to the ounces of zinc per 100 square feet of sheet steel coated. (top and bottom) So G-90 will have 90 ounces of Zinc- 45 ounces on each side per 100 square feet of roofing sheet steel.

For galvanized products, the MRA recommends a minimum of G-90 be used. For galvalume product used in residential application, the MRA recommends a minimum metallic coating of AZ-50.  This is in accordance with the Guidelines for Residential Metal Roofing published by the Metal Construction Association.  

However, if you want to be sure that you’re purchasing quality metal roofing for use on homes, the easiest thing you can do is to ask whether the manufacturer is an MRA member.  If the answer is yes, you’ll know that the product you’ll install is rated for residential applications.  A strong MRA member manufacturer can be your best friend in this business, providing training, specs for fasteners, underlayments, and ongoing support.

Facebook Marketing Tips for Contractors

Still think Facebook is where your kids share videos and like each other’s photos?  Think again.  Facebook is a major player in the marketing world, and the fastest growing audience is much older than you may think.  Consider these stats:

These numbers show that Facebook is a great place to reach metal roofing’s target market of homeowners.  That’s why you’ll find that the Metal Roofing Alliance has a Facebook Fan Page, as do many of our manufacturer members.  You can find the MRA page here.

Facebook Marketing 101

Ready to get started marketing with Facebook?  Here are a few tips:

  1. Create a Facebook Fan Page for your business.  You’ll need a personal Facebook account if you don’t already have one.  There is no cost for setting up the page.  Facebook does offer advertising options and tools to promote your page (more on that later); however, the basic fan page is free.

  2. Add photos and other content to your page that will appeal to your local audience.  Examples include: photos of recently completed projects, testimonials and homeowner tips.
  3. Like the MRA Facebook page, and share our consumer-friendly content on your page. Here’s an example of a recent post we created for Earth Day that you can easily share.

  4. Invite your customers to like your Facebook page.  Include the link to your page on every email you send, on your business card and in your brochures.  Every like your Facebook page receives is another person who you can communicate with on a regular basis.
  5. Post regular updates to your page – start with once or twice a week and build your frequency.  Be careful not to go overboard – too many posts, and your page will become annoying to your followers.  

As mentioned above, Facebook does offer advertising opportunities for your page.  They can be quite affordable, and can be very targeted to your local market.  We’ll cover that in an upcoming post on the Metal Roofing Industry blog, so be sure to check back here.

MRA 2015 Campaign Review

As the only association in the metal marketplace that’s focused on building consumer market share, the MRA remains committed to growing the residential metal roofing industry.  MRA has a strong integrated marketing campaign in place with proven results.

MRA’s 2015 marketing campaign delivered outstanding results.  For example, our digital advertising campaign generated over 24 million impressions with a .20% click through rate to the MRA website www.metalroofing.com.  For comparison, the industry standard click-through rate is only .08%, so the MRA’s digital program is much more effective than the norm.

In 2015, the MRA also ran 12 weeks of national cable television advertising that generated over 157 million household impressions.  Finally, our ongoing public relations program provided over 684 million impressions with coverage in a wide variety of national consumer media outlets, from HGTV to the Miami Herald and Housetopia.  MRA member products were also featured in a number of high-profile project homes that further build awareness for the durability and curb appeal of residential meta.

Our marketing team plans to continue our momentum into 2016 and further grow metal’s market share.
