New Study Finds Residential Re-Roofing Segment Largest Share of Roofing Demand

According to a recent study conducted by the Freedonia Group, re-roofing accounts for the largest share of residential roofing demand.  The U.S. has a significant number of older homes that will eventually require roof repair or outright replacement.  Many homeowners put off re-roofing projects during the 2007-2009 recession and its aftermath due to the unfavorable lending environment for home renovations.  These conditions are expected to improve through 2020 and drive growth for the replacement of older or worn roofs.

The report also found that in the South and West, building codes specify the use of cool roofing to reduce energy consumption.  Products that meet these code requirements (light-colored and reflective roofing) will see faster demand gains.  Strong growth in housing starts and population in the South and West will boost gains for metal roofing products and roofing tiles.  Demand for products will also be spurred by their suitability as cool roofing materials because of their ability to reflect sunlight.

For over the past decade the Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA) has focused on the replacement market, not new construction.  We’ve always recognized that the potential for growth would come from existing homes.  As a result, our integrated marketing efforts have targeted homeowners who are re-roofing their homes.

In addition to energy efficiency, the top reasons homeowners chose a metal roof include: longevity, strength/protection, attractiveness and good investment/value.  The most popular style of metal roofing is vertical ribbed panel, followed by shingle/shake tiles.  Copper is gaining in popularity but painted metal roofs are the most popular.

The Freedonia Group study, Residential Roofing, presents historical demand data plus forecasts by product.  The study also considers key market environment factors, assesses the industry structure, evaluates company market share and profiles U.S. industry players.  Freedonia’s market research studies provide timely access to reliable, unbiased analysis from which to benchmark performance.

Campaign Success: Five Signs You Need a New Roof

Our public relations team continues to create content that is relevant and utilized by both online and traditional media outlets.  A recent public relations campaign included a list of “Top Five Signs You May Need a New Roof.”   This content was targeted to consumers who may at the very beginning of their roofing decision-making process.  Our goal was to put metal roofing in their consideration set before a homeowner was even sure if they needed a new roof.

Bill Hippard, MRA’s executive director was quoted in the story that was picked up by media outlets including the Miami Herald, Chicago Tribune, the Philadelphia Inquirer and the online sites for numerous television outlets, too.

We’re happy to report that this metal roofing story has appeared in over 200 publications to date, and more are added each day.  This single story, including a link to the MRA website, has also delivered over 115 million impressions!

Several of MRA’s consumer research studies show that many homeowners are still resistant to the idea of metal roofing, thinking that they won’t fit into their neighborhood, or will be loud during a rain storm.  Therefore, our public relations team focuses on consumer education campaigns to dispel these myths.

Articles such as these help to create awareness of metal roofing among our homeowner target audience.  So, when a consumer reads an article that positively portrays the MRA or metal roofing in general, that homeowner is more likely to be open to the idea of metal roofing when it comes time to choose a roof for their home.

This ongoing national public relations campaign is a critical component of the Metal Roofing Alliance’s overall marketing campaign, generating millions of earned media impressions each year, helping to make every metal roof sale a little bit easier.

Free Roofing Book Available for Use by MRA Contractors

In our ongoing effort to promote residential metal roofing, the Metal Roofing Alliance has just released a new home improvement book titled “Above All You Need a Great Roof.”

Metal Roofing Book

Written by construction industry experts Jim Cory and Dave Yoho, the book is designed as a homeowner’s guide to choosing a new roof.  Written in a consumer-friendly format, this new book walks a homeowner through the entire process of replacing their roof, including identifying the need for a roof, choosing a quality installer, and general comparisons of various roofing systems.

As a project sponsored by the Metal Roofing Alliance, of course, metal roofing is highlighted throughout the book, including discussion of the investment grade benefits of a metal roof.  Although designed to help homeowners to understand the value of metal roofing, the book also has terrific potential for contractors.

Contractor members of the Metal Roofing Alliance can download a free electronic PDF version of the book through their online member dashboard for use in local marketing efforts.  Once downloaded, the PDF can be used on a contractor’s business website to generate leads or sent to potential customers via email.   MRA members can also purchase discounted printed copies of the book to distribute.

For more information, or advice on using the PDF or printed book, please contact MRA’s contractor relations team at (314)399-1951.
